Project Description

Small but beautifully formed, La Gomera island is a hidden treasure, just off the coast of Tenerife.

With a population of just 20,000 people and a landmass of 114km2, La Gomera is the second smallest of the seven main Canary Islands. The fact that there are no direct flights to La Gomera helps the island maintain its original charm, without being over-commercialised.

Hikers, nature lovers and peace-seekers are attracted to La Gomera, which can be reached by ferry or by plane from either of Tenerife´s airports.

The island was the last place that Christopher Columbus dropped anchor before setting off in search of the new world in 1492. This green and fertile land is also a favourite destination of nature and wildlife lovers. The upper reaches of the island are covered in a densely populated forest and are almost permanently shrouded in cloud and mist, resulting in lush and diverse vegetation.

These wooded areas of La Gomera have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the slopes are criss-crossed with a wide variety of paths and trails that offer stunning views.

The residents of La Gomera have a unique way of communicating with each other and demonstrations are held for visitors on a regular basis. Believed to have been in existence since Roman times, inhabitants used a form of communication across deep ravines called ‘whistled speech’.

Indigenous to the island, the threat of this language becoming extinct prompted the government to require all children at school to learn the language.

La Gomera is also noted for its distinctive wines and other culinary delights including Almogrote, a spicy cheese pate and Miel de Palma, a honey-like syrup extracted from palm trees which is delicious with fried aubergines and desserts.

La Gomera has no real tourism of its own but is a real magnet for sightseeing tourists from Tenerife. The island offers a unique look at nature in fantastic surroundings and comes as a highly recommended day trip out during your holiday in Tenerife.
