HOME / THINGS TO DO / KITZSTEINHORN
At an altitude of 3203 metres above sea level and surrounded by Austria’s highest peaks, the magnificent Kitzsteinhorn mountain and glacier are part of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the Alps’ biggest and most beautiful park located in the district of Kaprun.
The glacier ice does not melt, making a visit here dazzling at any time of year, and with snow on the mountain guaranteed from October to early summer, skiers and boarders can indulge their passion year round.
Out of winter it’s just as cool a destination as during colder months, when it wears its full colours as a young, freestyle hotspot. Summer is a time to chill with current music, drinks and snacks at the Ice Arena with its igloos, ice bar and snow beach: relax and admire the glitter and glint of the sun on ice crystals in a world turned ‘Swarovski’. Free guided glacier hiking tours are available to explore the mountain scenery and the views are phenomenal.
There are many hiking paths from the glacier plateau over alpine grassland. Tours set out from the Alpincenter, with its bars and restaurants, which is adjacent to the cable car station and those who want to climb can call upon experienced guides.
For snow freaks, Kitzteinhorn offers three snow parks and Austria’s biggest superpipe – an enormous 160m long and over 6 metres high. Glacier Park, at 2900m, opens during October and its more than 20 obstacles can be tackled by beginners to advanced. From December, the superpipe, Central Park (2500m) and Easy Park (2550m) ramp up the fun.
Legendary is the Black Mamba (black piste 14) a groomed slope up to 63% steep for those ready to take the 1000m long challenge covering 290m in altitude. There are 2 route recommendations for ski touring, the Eisbrecher (Icebreaker) and Schnee-Konigen (Snow Queen), running beside the pistes, and an almost 3km long cross country ski track at 2900m.
All this, just a 25 minute drive (25km) from CLC Alpine Centre!
The summit station Gipfelwelt 3000, the highest point in Salzburg easily reached by cable car, offers the National Park Gallery with its 360m mineshaft connecting peak and Panorama Platform from where there are awesome, almost mystical views. You can also see what it is like to soar like an eagle here in Cinema 3000.
With its comfortable and fast ski lifts, 41km of pistes – ranging in all shades of difficulty and attractions, the Kitzsteinhorn will transport adrenaline junkies, families and every winter sports fan, into a white wonderland that’s truly ‘wicked’.
