A ‘new lease of life’ in the sunshine
A mother-of-three fighting back against cancer, has described the moment she felt “a new lease of life” while staying at Club La Costa World.
Frances Burns was doing one of her favourite things – horseriding – in glorious sunshine while spending a week in May with her three children.
“I was totally relaxed. They took us up the mountain and you had this wonderful 360-degree view.
“It’s therapeutic for me and really amazing. It was the best bit of the holiday.”
Frances, who’s been battling the disease since 2013, was in Spain with her oldest son, Jamie, 24, her youngest son Kevin, nine, and 13-year-old daughter, Abi.
The family, from Scotland, arrived in Spain as part of the collaboration between the UK charity, Grant A Smile and CLC World Charity Holidays.
Grant A Smile offers practical home support to families facing up to chronic illnesses and/or mental health problems. It also aims to grant the “special wishes” of children growing up in such families.
Frances praised its founder Joyce Obaseki for “doing something absolutely delightful. I was so lucky. There were tears in my eyes.”
She recalls the moment the trip was finally confirmed and she could reveal to her family they were actually going to Spain.
“In the past it has always been doom and gloom. I could never have afforded this. I feel as if I’ve got back to my old self again.”
Their days on the resort were spent enjoying downtime together as a family and on one occasion hiring electric scooters at Fuengirola port.
“For the first time in a long while I wasn’t in any pain. The sunshine is definitely helping. The children don’t want to go home.
“Jamie is my carer and it’s also meant he’s had the chance for a bit of relaxation as well, which is just great.”
As she reflected on their stay at Club La Costa World the day before they were due to fly back to the UK, Frances said doing things together as a family in the sunshine had left her with “a massive smile on my face!”
