Sun, Sea, Sand and … Snow?
Ski the Sierra Nevada from the Costa del Sol!
Hundreds of winter sports fans will banish the post-festive blues on Spain’s Costa del Sol by taking to the snow-capped slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, just over a two-hour drive from sunny CLC Club La Costa World.
Located in the provinces of Granada, Malaga and Almeria, the Sierra Nevada is one of Europe’s most southerly ski resorts, with an abundance of sunshine during early spring. Spain, somewhat surprisingly, is the second-most mountainous country in Europe after Switzerland.
A Sierra Nevada ski holiday or day trip is ideal for all age groups and abilities who want to ‘find their feet’ on the stunning slopes of southern Spain.
Dominating the Sierra Nevada skyline, Mulhacén is mainland Spain’s highest peak (at 3,478m above sea level) and was named after the former Moorish leader of Granada, Abu l-Hasan Ali. According to legend the King was buried on the summit of the mountain in the 15th century. If you want to get ‘up close and personal’ with Mulhacén guided single-day ascents start from the villages of Capileira and Trevélez.
Open from 24th November, 2018 to 28th April 2019 (weather and snow conditions depending), the Sierra Nevada resort, just 32km from Granada city, offers ski schools, equipment and boot hire, two crèches and a Kid’s Club in the centre of the village.
With 131 runs for all skill levels, 21 lifts (to transport a capacity of over 45,000 skiers an hour), 15 ski schools and a fantastic snowboard park, the Sierra Nevada is a Mecca for snow addicts from all over Europe.
If you want to go skiing near Malaga in a safe environment, the Sierra Nevada ski schools are among the best in Spain. Novice slopes allow you to enjoy a gentle introduction to skiing, and allow you to breathe in the mountain air, before building up your confidence for the faster runs. You can also check daily weather and ski conditions in the Sierra Nevada before you go.
A choice of bars, restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes and budgets can be found in and around the village. Serving everything from creamy hot chocolate and sweet pastries to the hearty feast of ‘Plato Alpujarreño’, with black pudding, local ham, grilled pork, chorizo, egg and fried potatoes, you will not go hungry in the hills!
Just a hop, skip and a jump away from CLC Club La Costa World, the snowy paradise of the Sierra Nevada makes for an excellent day trip with the family. Skiers and non-skiers are well catered for and you can be back in time for a swim in one of our heated pools before dinner!
