The film director Ridley Scott, famous for cinema greats such as Alien, Blade Runner and Thelma and Louise¹, was in Málaga in December looking for locations for his new film – The Cartel.
The old prison in the Cruz de Humilladero quarter will become a Mexican maximum security prison in the film based around Don Winslow´s novel of the same name. The novel has been described as “a magnum opus…a drug war version of The Godfather ”.
The story revolves around a cat and mouse game between the head of a Mexican drug cartel and a US drugs agent. The rumour mill has Leonardo di Caprio named as the chief protagonist, but that is yet to be confirmed. Filming is due to start in Málaga in the summer.
