Every year in early March, my husband and I leave an often cold and blustery England for three weeks at CLC World in Spain. On 9th March, we set out to drive the 1700 miles to the Costa del Sol. We drove through France and Spain and were blissfully unaware of the situation that was developing in Europe.
On Saturday 14th March we arrived at the check in desk, delighted to see folks we have come to know over the years and ready to enjoy our first week in the Signature Suite.
We learned immediately that all was not well! Spain was on the verge of going into lockdown and everything was closing. From that moment on the support and kindness shown us by CLC staff has been incredible.
Our initial thought was that we must drive straight back to England; all our homeward hotels were booked as was our channel crossing. However, we quickly found out that all hotels in both Spain and France were closed. By Monday, we were getting quite anxious but Belinda Jenkins the Signature Concierge Manager constantly supported us, telling us not to worry – CLC World would look after us.
Our next plan was to try and get a ferry crossing from Spain to Portsmouth. My husband is 76 and I am 74 – to travel from Fuengirola to Santander or Bilboa without a stop posed a huge challenge, especially as my husband is also disabled. Nevertheless, we felt we must try. Success! We managed to get a booking for 25th of March. Sadly, within two hours Brittany Ferries had cancelled all bookings and ceased all passenger ferries. Imagine our dismay! We phoned the British Consulate in Malaga to see if we could get a flight and leave our car here. Once the whole scenario was explained to them, our age and Ray’s physical challenges they were adamant that we MUST not travel.
At this point too, the whole resort was about to close down. CLC World are wonderful! Belinda and Lorraine, the Guest Services Manager worked together to enable us to stay in the apartment for as long as we needed. I cannot tell you how much we appreciated this incredible gesture.
We have now been here for four weeks. Both Belinda and Lorraine call us regularly to make sure all is well. We feel safe – probably safer than we would be in England. We feel confident and cared for and what was potentially a disaster has been averted.
It is difficult to find the right words to express our gratitude to CLC World staff for the kindness they have shown. This whole situation has proved to us, if we needed proof, just what customer care means with CLC World.
Thank you to all the staff, housekeeping who made sure we had clean bed linen and towels, basics and toiletries, concierge staff who treated us with such kindness and understanding in a very worrying situation, and especially to Belinda and Lorraine whose on-going support is way beyond the call of duty.
With grateful thanks to you all,
Ray and Gill Bowker
