When I first heard about the Cotswold Water Park, I assumed it was some kind of aquatic fun fair. Well, I’m certainly up for that, but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised when I found that it is, in fact, an extraordinary network of man-made lakes straddling the border between Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. The waterways were formed as work in the limestone quarries was phased out over the past 50 years.
I love it when I discover somewhere new to explore on this varied island of ours. And in these difficult times, an uncomplicated close-to-home holiday can do wonders for both heart and soul.
The De Vere Hotel is a new destination for CLC World members. It’s set beside a beautiful, tranquil lake in the heart of the water park between Cirencester and Swindon. When I arrived for a short stay a few weeks ago, I honestly felt myself take a big breath of relief to be somewhere new after the enforced routine of lockdown.
My apartment was everything you’d expect from a CLC WORLD affiliate. A comfy lounge, a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area, spacious bedroom and bathroom. Best of all, it looked directly out over the lake which, for nature lovers like myself, offered hours of enjoyment spotting the abundant birdlife.
If you don’t feel like catering for yourself, the hotel’s four restaurants and cafes can provide anything from a snack to a full dinner. It all felt perfectly COVID secure, with everyone wearing masks indoors, until you’re seated.
And there’s so much to do and see outdoors. There are well over 100 lakes in the Water Park, and they offer everything from canoeing, kayaking and sailing, to wakeboarding, water-skiing, and windsurfing. You can also go horse riding and cycling…or just a take a walk around the nature reserves.
When you’ve enjoyed all that fresh air, the De Vere has a magnificent spa with a pool and gym plus some great pampering treatments. And, after the year we’ve had, I reckon we all deserve a bit of pampering!
I’m truly impressed by the way CLC WORLD is rising to the challenges thrown up by the pandemic. The resorts we all know and love are still there for us, but the company is also investing in new locations, like the De Vere Cotswold Water Park, so that as many members as possible can enjoy a much needed holiday.
