We look back at just some of our highlights of 2019 at CLC World Resorts & Hotels, including glamorous fundraising events on the Costa del Sol, the exciting Gatehouse Gin launch in Scotland and a host of top TripAdvisor awards worldwide.
CLC World acknowledged by Mijas Town Hall
On 21st January, Roy Peires, CLC World’s chairman and founder, was welcomed by the mayor of Mijas, to be recognised for the company’s work in the municipality.
Described by the mayor as “the most important businessperson in Mijas”, CLC World’s chairman and founder was asked to sign the Town Hall’s Honours Book, strengthening the tie between the local administration and the company.
“35 years ago, I came to Mijas by accident, never thinking I would end up doing business and creating a company here, but it happened; I have always been happy to work in Mijas and with its people. It’s a great honour for me to have spent time working in the municipality,” Roy said.
The mayor also noted the “corporate social responsibility that is shown by CLC World”, making it a “benchmark company”.
TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence for 10 CLC World Resorts
10 CLC World resorts received TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence in May. The awards consider the quality, quantity and recentness of reviews over a 12-month period – another testament to the hard work and efforts of our worldwide team who continue to provide excellent CLC World holidays.
Each year we receive hundreds of reviews from Members and guests on TripAdvisor alone. The majority of reviews recognise the dedication, passion and hard work of staff across our resorts and the quality of the accommodation and facilities we offer.
Certificates of Excellence were awarded to:
- Kusadasi Golf & Spa (Turkey)
- Alpine Centre (Austria)
- Duchally Country Estate (Scotland)
- Sunningdale Village (Tenerife)
- Apollonium Spa & Beach (Turkey)
- Monterey (Tenerife)
- Paradise (Tenerife)
- San Diego Suites (Spain)
- Encantada (USA)
- Regal Oaks (USA)
Duchally Country Estate and Monterey have been Hall of Fame Members – qualification requires 5 consecutive years’ Certificates of Excellence – since 2015. Joining them in the Hall of Fame are Sunningdale Village, Encantada and San Diego Suites.
Our two restaurant listings, Zacary’s Bistro & Bar at Sunningdale Village, Tenerife and Safari restaurant at California Beach on the Costa del Sol were also awarded Certificates of Excellence!
4* for CLC Duchally from VisitScotland
In June, CLC Duchally Country Estate once again showed its class with a 4* review from the Scottish tourist board, VisitScotland.
This year, Duchally was marked on five key areas, as food is only reviewed every 2 years, with the following results: cleanliness (92%), hospitality and friendliness (82%), bathrooms (83%), bedrooms (82%), plus service and efficiency (80%).
An “excellent first impression” was how the inspector viewed the “tastefully landscaped grounds and gardens” – proof that first impressions really do count.
The inspector was also impressed with the recent extension to the hotel, commenting: “The new dining/conservatory is an excellent addition to the hotel, and I understand it has proved to be very popular with your guests, particularly at breakfast.”
Fundación CLC World 20th Anniversary Dinner
On 13th September, Fundación CLC World celebrated 20 fabulous years of charity and community work with a gala evening at Safari restaurant, California Beach resort on the Costa del Sol.
More than 200 guests joined Roy Peires and the Fundación’s president, Juan Miguel Marcos, to mark the special occasion. They were greeted with a cocktail made with our very own Gatehouse Gin (distilled at Duchally Country Estate) and enjoyed delicious canapés that reflected the local cuisine.
In 1999, Roy founded Fundación CLC World with his late friend and partner, Francis Cruz Dias to offer support to those in need on the Costa del Sol; with the arrival of resorts on Tenerife, the charity’s remit expanded to include the island.
Roy, Juan Miguel and the mayor of Mijas, all gave speeches to the guests who represented a cross-section of Malaga society and CLC World: local authorities, charities, the media, the Fundación’s sponsors and collaborators, Members, CLC World team members and Fundación ambassadors.
Roy told those present why he set up the charity, “I have been in business in Spain for 35 years, and it is a second home to me. My philosophy is that wherever I operate and am successful, it is my duty to reinvest and support members of the local community whether that is through financial aid, volunteering or donation of goods.”
Gatehouse Gin Launch
June 20th saw the official launch of Gatehouse Gin at Duchally Country Estate with our ambassador and UK journalist and broadcaster, Jennie Bond cutting the ribbon and declaring our distillery open!
As the name of the gin suggests, the distillery is in the gatehouse at Duchally. The distilling expertise comes from Duchally’s partner in the venture, Strathearn Distillery – a local craft distillery which produces its own gin and rum.
Guests at the launch enjoyed a Signature cocktail made with Gatehouse Gin while viewing the botanicals garden and distillery. The botanicals garden will supply ingredients for Gatehouse Gin and guests’ own distillations, as well as providing a venue for summer gin tastings.
Contributing to the fight against cancer
On Friday 15th November, Fundación CLC World handed over a cheque for €15,000 to AECC, following October’s month of fundraising on the Costa del Sol.
From Fabulous Food Fridays to car washes, a fun-filled finale of bushtucker trials and a Halloween party and much more in between, the Costa del Sol team pulled out all the stops once again.
Juan Miguel Marcos, Fundación President said: “When I see all the work, the effort and the enthusiasm amongst the staff when they are organising the activities throughout October I can only feel proud to be part of this great family. All of you have made it possible to achieve amazing results, once again.”
Pedro Gonzalez, Director of AECC said: “This year, part of the collection will be used to launch a physiotherapy service to cure lymphedema, a side-effect of breast cancer. It will also serve to support pre-doctoral scholarships and encourage young university graduates in research.”
