Granada is one of the most beautiful of Spanish cities
Many seasoned travellers would say that if you see only one city in Spain it should be Granada.
The jewel in the city’s crown is the Alhambra, Spain’s best preserved and oldest Moorish Palace, and a Unesco World Heritage Site which is visited by around 3 million people each year.
Granada is one of the most beautiful of Andalucia’s cities, and is just a day-trip away for visitors staying at Club La Costa World, on the Costa del Sol.
The stunningly beautiful Alhambra was the palace and fortress of the Nasrid Sultans, rulers of the last Spanish Moorish kingdom, and got its name from the Arabic al-qala’at al-hamra (red castle), which describes the glowing rich colour of the stonework. It is one of the most romantic monuments in Europe and one of the most photographed, and offers stunning views over the city sprawled beneath it, and of the white-washed Albaycin, the old Arab Quarter, clinging to the hillside opposite and just waiting to be explored on foot.
Discover history at every step
Visitors from our Costa del Sol accommodation will discover that Granada is rich in heritage and history. As you wend your way through sprawling streets, and peer into shops where guitar makers are hard at work, or stop for a Moroccan mint tea at one of the many teterias (tea houses) your senses are assailed by the lively buzz of a city at home with its historic roots.
Enjoy a cold beer or sherry at one of the bars lining Plaza Nueva (the oldest of Granada’s squares, despite its name) before setting off on foot to the Alhambra, or the Albaycin.
Visit the Cathedral, the first Renaissance church built in Spain, and commissioned by Queen Isabella following the conquest of the city by the Catholic Monarchs – the first stone was laid in 1523 on the site of an old Mosque.
Next door to the Cathedral is the Royal Chapel, home to the remains of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, and close to Plaza Nueva marvel at the building skills of the Arab workmen who 1,000 years ago constructed the Banuelo, the oldest and best preserved Arab baths in Spain.
Granada is an easy drive from Club La Costa World for visitors with hire cars who want to organize their own timetable, or there are excursions which take in the main sights of this beautiful city.
Tickets for the Alhambra are timed and it is important not to miss your allotted slot.
