A warm welcome awaits at Whixall Marina, situated on the Prees branch of the stunning 44 miles long Llangollen Canal – one of the most spectacular in the extensive British waterways network.
Tranquillity itself, Whixall Marina is surrounded by wonderful countryside, and with its beautifully maintained narrowboats and the unusual ‘village green’ in one corner, it’s a great place to relax on your holiday, whether you choose to spend your time afloat or on shore.
Although a perfect base for exploring the Shropshire and North Wales on 2 or 4 wheels, Whixall’s real beauty is in its excellent cruising location. Head down towards the wildlife havens of the ‘meres’ at Ellesmere and then on to Chirk on the Welsh border before reaching Llangollen itself – via the magnificent Pontcysllte Aqueduct. One of the world’s most impressive waterway structures, the Victorian aqueduct carries both the canal and narrowboats, at a staggering height of over 38 metres, across the Dee Valley – a distance of some 300 metres!
Heading in the opposite direction takes you across lovely open country via the lovely medieval village of Whitchurch and up to Wrenbury as you head gently north towards the Cheshire Plain and the Shropshire Union Canal.
The stunning 44 miles long Llangollen Canal – one of the most spectacular in the extensive British waterways network.
Either way, there are plenty of lovely canalside pubs, where easy-going eating and drinking real ale are the order of the day and then, after a tough day’s cruising – at 3mph – you can settle down in the comfort of your floating home to relive it all over again.
NB: for health and safety reasons, at least one member of each party must have a good knowledge of English, otherwise the marina may not allow the party to cruise. 1 bed narrowboats require a minimum of two able-bodied adults to cruise, and 2 bed narrowboats require a minimum of three. Canaltime reserves the right to restrict cruising subject to the prevailing conditions, which influence the health and safety of guests. Please note: external narrowboat images are illustrative only; actual boat sizes and designs may differ.
