A diamond way to celebrate a wedding anniversary!
When Daphne Finch and her husband David left an Earls Court exhibition clutching a ‘lucky ticket’ they had no idea they were holding the key to more than 30 years of exciting holidays in their hands.
‘My brother had just bought a timeshare and it all sounded so exciting we decided to go to an exhibition. On our way out we were presented with a lucky ticket and discovered that we had won a week’s timeshare. But we really thought nothing of it until we received a phone call to assure us that it was all true and we had won, and when would we like to visit it!’ said Daphne.
That was 34 years ago, and the couple travelled to the Costa del Sol to enjoy their new holiday home in the sun at Las Farolas – they were so impressed they promptly bought another week to add to the one they had won.
And thirty years ago, they were offered the opportunity to upgrade and become founding members of the newly created Club La Costa, on the Costa del Sol. Since then they have noticed a lot of changes as their resort has developed.
‘But everything has been done so beautifully, with wonderful gardens, and we have never lost our view!’ said Daphne.
The couple are currently relaxing in the June sunshine at CLC Club La Costa World and took some time out to remember their past holidays. Using their membership and the exchange system they have visited so many places, from Venezuela and Mexico in South America, to most of North America and much of Europe.
This year Daphne, aged 79, and David, 85, celebrate their Diamond Wedding anniversary and CLC invited the couple to a complimentary celebratory meal at the resort’s Safari restaurant. They will be cruising to Croatia and the Greek islands when they actually celebrate their 60 years as a married couple on September 11th. They booked the cruise through CLC World Travel and it will be their third cruising holiday in recent years.
“We have done so much travelling over the years, enjoying holidays abroad almost every year of our marriage, that now we are taking the time to enjoy our home resort here on the Costa del Sol, where it began,’ said the couple.
They first met when Daphne, aged just 15, was permitted by her parents to go to a dance in the local scout hut in Walthamstow chaperoned by her sister and spotted David at the end of the room. They danced together, and Daphne went home and declared she had met the man she was going to marry! And the rest, as they say, is history.
Since those days the couple lived in Ongar in Essex, where Daphne was a pioneer in pre-school provision and for 40 years ran her own pre-school nursery, and knew it was time to retire when the children of the children of the children started to walk through the door! David in the meantime, was a mechanical engineer working in heavy engineering, working for 48 years with the same company. They now live near Rugby to be nearer family.
“We are nothing if not loyal!’ he said. The couple added: “Everyone at CLC has been marvellous and so kind in helping us celebrate this eventful year and we could not have asked for anything more memorable.” They have been accompanied on their two week trip by their niece and her husband. “We wanted to share this experience with them and they have been loving our accommodation. We can look back over so many CLC World enjoyable holidays shared with family and friends.”
